Congratulations England

The Ashes return to England, no doubt thanks to the South African triumvirate of Strauss-Trott-Prior, which means Australia are now the 4th best test team in the world.

South African actually. World cricket has had its noses rubbed in the dirt by Australian cricket for over a decade. Give us our moment to rejoice that the stranglehold might have finally been broken.

Then I'll uncover myself, o Sean, to reveal my first name. Generally, however, the English people with whom I've watched the games (usually, by a strange – or not so strange – twist of fate, when we've been losing wickets in a thunderous clatter) don't gloat, as I didn't in 2006–7.

And, Darren, the Indians haven't really had their noses rubbed in the dirt, certainly not in the last few years, while I remember several crackingly close series with the Saffers. Nonetheless you're right, there has been a stranglehold, but it's been slipping for the last four years – this is hardly a new moment, whether for Saffers, Indians or (now, gulp) the English.

Adrian it is breed into most (all) South Africans to hate the Aussies in sport. alot of people have the problem of also hating the english but in the ashes it generally turns out that we support England.

Ps sorry for being so high and mighty

Sean, no worries about height or might.

I'm intrigued by the sporting hatred of the Aussies. Before isolation, you guys walloped us at cricket, and after it you've been beating us at rugby (at least in SA) with depressing frequency. Is the hostility an age-old thing, or relatively new?

Ja(yes) Adrian the the hatred is as age old as it comes. some reasones to this hatred could be because we feel that you have the same colors as us( Green and gold), that you have a simalare climate to us ( like charges repel each other), also that we feel jelouse that half our workforce live in perth. come to think about it we should really hate NZ more coz they threw things at us when we played rugby there during isolation. stop hating Aus in sport? nah
